Comment: Of course we all know what A300 operators should do but again it is the bean counters who rule the roost. They simply balance the likelihood of a crash and how much they (or more likely their insurers) will have to pay out against the cost of grounding the plane and re engineering the system. I say re engineering because simply replacing a part with another with the same design defect is not going to solve the problem. Readers may recall the Ford Motor company doing a similar calculation.

Comment: DAB, almost an answer to a problem nobody has (yet)! Processing delay, overloaded Multiplex (too many channels for the bandwidth) & so power hungry that battery operation is virtually impossible. Without the benefit of satellite reception (ie direct "off air") the DAB quality is markedly inferior to FM, due to Multiplex overloading initiated by the bean counters. National coverage is only flaky, at best; which is perhaps our best practical hope for the future.

Comment: David Good to meet you again and have an enjoyable lunch at the Institute in July. I've just finished reading "Far Point" which I thought was excellent. We look forward to reading your sequel. The grammar was in accordance with out old English master and it was pleasing to note that "from" followed different rather than "to" which is very often the case even on Radio 4!
